President Donald Trump used a White House press briefing on Wednesday to highlight his administration's construction projects, including a new helipad on the South Lawn and a planned ballroom.
Trump stated that the helipad was necessary because the downdraft from helicopters landing on the grass had previously caused damage. "The grass was literally scattered all over the place," he said.
He also discussed a new driveway outside the White House, noting the use of granite and a precise, radial cut for each stone. "One thing I know how to do is build," Trump remarked, adding that he believed he had a unique ability to identify and address construction needs due to his background in real estate.
The administration is reportedly planning to spend at least $900 million on White House construction. This includes a planned ballroom, which Trump described as a "military complex" that would feature a drone-proof roof equipped with drones to protect Washington, D.C., and the White House.
Regarding the funding for these projects, Trump indicated that the helipad was paid for by the manufacturer of the helicopters. He also mentioned that the company responsible for replacing grass on the South Lawn had contributed to his campaign.
Trump's administration is seeking Supreme Court approval to proceed with the construction of the $400 million ballroom, after a D.C. Circuit panel upheld a lower court's order to halt above-ground construction. When asked about the possibility of the Supreme Court ruling against him, Trump expressed confidence that this would not happen.
