General Manager Trent Redden is stepping into a more prominent role leading the Los Angeles Clippers' basketball operations as the team navigates significant penalties handed down by the NBA. The sanctions stem from the league's investigation into circumventing salary cap rules related to star player Kawhi Leonard.

Both franchise owner and chairman Steve Ballmer and president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank have been suspended for their roles in the scandal. Ballmer is suspended for one year from league and team activities, while Frank faces a six-month suspension. This leaves a leadership vacuum that Redden, a long-time Clippers executive, appears positioned to fill.

This past week saw the resolution of the Kawhi Leonard trade, with the Clippers sending Leonard back to the Toronto Raptors. The trade, initially agreed upon in late June, was delayed until the NBA's investigation concluded. The Raptors had stated they would await the investigation's outcome due to potential risks associated with any findings affecting Leonard. The Clippers will receive Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two unprotected first-round draft picks, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and two second-round picks in exchange for Leonard.

Redden, who led the communication between the Clippers and the Raptors for the trade, is expected to take on interim leadership of basketball operations. The Clippers have not officially named an interim leader, but Redden's involvement in finalizing the trade indicates his ascent. He has been with the Clippers since becoming assistant general manager ahead of the 2018-2019 season and was promoted to general manager in 2023.

Prior to joining the Clippers, Redden built a career in NBA front offices, starting as an intern with the Cleveland Cavaliers before moving up to roles in basketball operations management and scouting. He graduated from SMU with honors in 2006. In 2023, Lawrence Frank described Redden as an "integral advisor on every major decision and acquisition" made by the franchise, highlighting his extensive experience and trusted position within the organization.
