The long-running reality television series "The Only Way Is Essex" (TOWIE) is back for its 38th season, promising the familiar blend of explosive feuds, romantic scandals, and significant life events. Original cast member Amy Childs, who joined the show at 20 and is now a mother of four, noted that the series, which first aired in 2010, continues to draw viewers globally.
Childs, often referred to as an "OG" among the cast, compares her enduring presence on the show to that of Ken Barlow from "Coronation Street." She now largely observes the drama from the sidelines, staying informed through cast WhatsApp groups while offering support to younger members. Reflecting on her early days, Childs admitted to a lack of expectation regarding the show's longevity, recalling producers warning that cast members might return to their previous jobs. She also humorously recounted early public interactions, where viewers mistook her genuine lack of knowledge, such as her famous confusion over the capital of India, for acting.
Courtney Green, who joined the show in 2016, shared similar sentiments about the show being her primary livelihood, stating, "Without it, I wouldn’t be able to pay my bills. I wouldn’t be able to pay my mortgage." She expressed frustration with the notion that cast members should seek "real" jobs or face removal from the show, emphasizing its legitimacy as a career.
Career Paths and Show Dynamics
The opportunities for cast members have evolved since the show's inception. Childs noted that it was easier for early stars like Joey Essex and Gemma Collins to stand out and achieve significant financial success. Today, Green described the landscape as saturated and highly competitive, making it more challenging for new cast members to gain individual recognition on other reality programs.
Other cast members have pursued diverse career paths. Elma Pazar, 34, transitioned from accounting to becoming an eyelash technician and business owner after appearing on "Love Island." Amber Turner, 33, has been on TOWIE since 2017, having previously worked as a waitress and fashion blogger. Ella Rae Wise, the youngest of the current featured cast at 26, was a hairdresser before being scouted on Instagram. Wise also addressed the persistent assumption that the show is scripted, asserting that the cast's real-life experiences are integral to the show's appeal, stating, "We don’t get scripts. It would be easier if we did. But this is our real lives and that’s why we are so good at it."
Navigating Public Scrutiny and Interpersonal Conflicts
Living life under public scrutiny is a core aspect of TOWIE. Green recalled the difficulty of discovering her then-boyfriend Myles Barnett's infidelity, a situation amplified by public reaction and advice from thousands of viewers. The show's format often brings interpersonal conflicts to the forefront. During a recent cast trip to Vietnam, significant disagreements arose, including a dispute between Elma and Harry that involved multiple cast members, a storyline that is reportedly still unfolding.
Elma Pazar explained that unlike real-life disagreements, conflicts on TOWIE are always addressed, contributing to its dramatic appeal. She stated that friendship break-ups on the show can be more impactful than romantic ones, as there is an expectation of genuine connection. The current series also features a proposal between Junaid and Joe, which has reportedly led to further conflict. Another ongoing feud between Ella Wise and Freddie Bentley, which began on a previous trip to Portugal, continues to be a point of contention.
Wise advised against bringing close friends onto the show, citing that such relationships often deteriorate under the pressure of public broadcast, emphasizing the importance of separating personal and professional lives.
Moments of Joy and Celebration
Despite the frequent drama, the series also highlights positive moments. Amber Turner mentioned the anticipation surrounding Sophie Kasaei and Jordan Brook's baby, Brody, who was born in June. The couple faced challenges, including difficulties conceiving and Jordan's severe illness with viral meningitis, during which the cast rallied to offer support.
"It just shows that we really are one big family. A dysfunctional family, sometimes, who row a lot, but when the big things happen, differences are put aside and we celebrate," said Ella. The cast also celebrated.
Amy Childs is preparing for a large wedding ceremony in Spain in September, following her private marriage to partner Billy in April. The event is anticipated to be a significant occasion, potentially with a televised spin-off and a guest list featuring many TOWIE personalities. Childs noted that ITV is involved in managing the guest list for the celebration.
