Tony Romo is facing three additional citations in connection with his arrest on July 23 in Wisconsin. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was initially arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence.
His case was amended Thursday to include citations for possessing open intoxicants in a motor vehicle, unsafe passing on the right, and first-offense operating while intoxicated. Romo had already received a citation for refusing to take a test for intoxication after his arrest.
Romo, 46, has been the lead game analyst for CBS’ NFL coverage since 2017. CBS Sports president David Berson stated earlier this month that there is no set timeline for a decision regarding Romo’s future with the network.
During Romo's absence, analyst J.J. Watt will join play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson on CBS Sports’ lead NFL team. Their first broadcast together is scheduled for September 13, when the Minnesota Vikings host the Green Bay Packers.
Romo's arrest occurred following a traffic stop while he was driving south on Interstate 43. According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests before being arrested, booked, and released.
An open bottle of an alcoholic beverage was discovered in the passenger side of Romo’s black Jeep during an inventory procedure before it was towed, according to citations released by the sheriff’s office. Body camera footage showed Romo telling deputies he had been coming from a golf course and was heading to visit his grandparents when he was stopped. A deputy noted to Romo that he suspected impairment due to "red glassy eyes" and an "odor of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage."
A spokesperson for Romo stated that he "accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved." The spokesperson added that they are working with local authorities and communicating with CBS about next steps.
Romo, who played for the Cowboys from 2004 to 2016, holds the franchise record for career touchdown passes with 248. He previously held the record for career passing yards until Dak Prescott surpassed it last season.
