Actor and comedian Tiffany Haddish avoided additional jail time Tuesday, pleading guilty to a misdemeanor alcohol-related driving charge that originated from her 2022 arrest in Georgia. A judge placed Haddish on 12 months of probation and ordered her to avoid drugs and alcohol, and to complete a substance abuse evaluation.
Haddish was credited for the brief time she spent in jail following her arrest. Other charges in the case were dropped.
The incident leading to the charge occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 14, 2022. A 911 caller reported seeing a person who appeared to be asleep in the driver's seat of a white Ford Explorer stopped at a traffic light in Peachtree City, Georgia, according to a court filing. An officer observed an SUV matching the description and stopped Haddish as she was pulling into a neighborhood, according to a police report.
Haddish's legal team had sought to dismiss the case, arguing that the delay in resolving it violated her right to a speedy trial. However, Fayette County State Court Judge Jason Thompson rejected these arguments. The judge noted that Haddish and her attorneys had requested some delays, including one to attend a fashion show in Morocco and another to leave a hearing early for a flight. He also stated that Haddish had not provided evidence of missed performing opportunities or financial harm due to the delay.
Haddish also faced an arrest in November 2023 in Beverly Hills, California, on suspicion of driving under the influence. In that case, Haddish reached a plea agreement in February 2024, pleading no contest to a vehicle code violation, and the two misdemeanor DUI charges were dismissed.
Haddish's film credits include "Girls Trip," "Night School," "Like a Boss," and "The Kitchen." She is also the author of the New York Times best seller "The Last Unicorn," which received a Grammy nomination. Haddish won an Emmy in 2018 for her appearance on "Saturday Night Live" and a Grammy in 2021 for her special "Black Mitzvah."
