Three individuals have been sentenced to a combined 15 years in prison for a daylight smash-and-grab robbery at a family-run jewelry store in Richmond, southwest London. The incident, which saw gems worth £225,000 stolen, occurred on January 31. Deniz Mehmet, 28, Lee Ramsey, 46, and Robert Clarke, 50, were captured on viral video footage smashing the windows of Gregory & Co jewelers.
The footage showed one of the men repeatedly striking the shop's large glass window with a tool until it broke. An accomplice stood by with a large blue bag, into which the pair stuffed watches, bracelets, and other items from the shop window. Staff members attempted to intervene but were unsuccessful. The robbers fled the scene on foot, in an area familiar to fans of the television series 'Ted Lasso,' which has filmed in Richmond.
Investigation and Arrests
Specialist officers from the Metropolitan Police's Flying Squad launched an extensive investigation, reviewing CCTV footage, conducting forensic analysis, and identifying a vehicle believed to be linked to the robbery. This meticulous work led to the identification of the three suspects. They were arrested in March and April on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery.
Bodyworn camera footage showed officers arresting Ramsey at his home in Harlow in the early hours of March 31. Clarke was apprehended the same night at his home in Rochford, where he was asleep. Mehmet was arrested on April 8 while walking on a street in Basildon.
Guilty Pleas and Sentencing
Clarke, Ramsey, and Mehmet all pleaded guilty to conspiracy to rob. They were each sentenced to five years and three months in prison at Kingston Crown Court. None of the stolen jewelry has been recovered.
Detective Superintendent Dan Mitchell of the Met's Flying Squad stated that robberies of this nature cause significant concern for residents and businesses. He expressed hope that the sentences demonstrate the force's commitment to tackling smash-and-grab robberies and assured that those involved will be pursued relentlessly.
Representatives for Gregory & Co, a family-run business operating in Richmond for over 45 years, expressed gratitude for the public's overwhelming support and kindness following the incident, stating they are reassured that "good outweighs the bad."
