Thousands of rail passengers experienced significant disruption on Wednesday due to a widespread power failure that impacted train services across the North West of England. The outage led to cancelled trains, lengthy delays, and, in some cases, passenger evacuations from stranded services.
Passengers described their journeys as a "nightmare," with some facing hours-long delays and others being forced to arrange expensive alternative transport. Sarah Nelson, a remedial massage therapist, reported a "nightmare" five-hour round trip to return to her home in Blackpool after her train was stuck at Horwich Parkway for over 90 minutes. She was one of many affected passengers who shared their experiences.
Chris, a technology consultant traveling to Manchester from Scotland for business, anticipated needing to book a hotel for the night due to the extensive delays. He stated that passengers were being informed there was no power to the trains and that services were not expected to resume until the end of the day. "It's costly, inconvenient... frustrating," he commented, adding that he would likely have to wait until the next day to travel home.
A couple returning from Gibraltar to Clitheroe, Lancashire, after landing at Manchester Airport, also faced disruption. Matt and Sarah had to book an Uber to get home, noting the significant additional cost.
Some passengers were evacuated from trains that stopped prematurely due to signalling failures. Stacey, an office worker traveling from Deansgate to Leyland, Lancashire, paid £60 for a taxi home after her train stopped when the signals failed. She praised the staff for their "calm and professional" efforts in organizing a controlled evacuation from the viaduct.
The Manchester Rail Operating Centre, responsible for controlling railway operations in the region, including signalling, was opened in July 2014. Its operational control boundary extends from Crewe to Carlisle and from Todmorden to the Welsh border.
A spokesperson from an unspecified entity posted on X (formerly Twitter) expressing regret for the disruption faced by passengers in the North West affected by the power outage.
