Australia's historic luxury rail service, The Ghan, has introduced its new top-tier Aurora Australis Suites, marking a significant enhancement to its transcontinental journey. The suites, designed by Woods Bagot and crafted in South Australia, offer private bedrooms, custom beds, spacious en-suite bathrooms, and ornate interiors, aiming to recapture the romance of early 20th-century train travel.
These new accommodations come as the demand for luxury train journeys experiences a resurgence globally. Services like the Royal Scotsman in Scotland, the Orient Express across Europe, and Rovos Rail in Africa have also seen increased popularity. This trend is driven by a demographic with disposable income and leisure time, often booking cabins up to a year in advance.
The Ghan itself has been traversing the Australian landscape for 97 years, covering 1,851 miles between Darwin and Adelaide. The journey includes stops in Katherine, Alice Springs, and Coober Pedy. The train's name pays homage to the Afghan cameleers who journeyed through the Australian Outback in the 1930s, and it remains the only railway attempting these desert routes.
Operated by Adelaide-based Journey Beyond, The Ghan includes all meals and beverages, private cabins with en-suite facilities, and the new suites. The Aurora Australis Suites are priced from approximately $13,350 per person and were reportedly sold out until March at the time of reporting.
Beyond the new suites, The Ghan is also set to debut a new northbound itinerary from Adelaide to Darwin next year. This extended four-day journey will allow passengers to explore the Flinders Ranges, Marla, Alice Springs, and Katherine, offering off-train experiences in these rugged locations.
However, the appeal of The Ghan extends beyond its luxury amenities. The service draws a diverse range of passengers, including professionals, farmers, teachers, and tradespeople, contributing to a unique social dynamic. This eclectic mix of travelers, combined with the rugged, sometimes bumpy, nature of the journey due to shared tracks with freight trains, is presented as an authentic reflection of early pioneer train travel. The less-than-smooth ride, a departure from the serene glide of purely passenger rail, is framed as part of the adventure and romance that distinguishes The Ghan from other luxury lines.
