A 16-year-old suspect has been arrested in Colorado Springs in connection with the fatal shooting of Penn State student Billy Schmidt, who was killed during an armed robbery in Philadelphia on June 6. The U.S. Marshals Service took Azzubair Outen-Fleming into custody after a month-long manhunt. He is currently being held at a juvenile detention center awaiting extradition to Philadelphia.
Authorities issued warrants for Outen-Fleming and another 16-year-old, Kaiseem Smith, on Tuesday. Smith, who is also alleged to have been involved in the shooting, remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous.
Philadelphia Police Department Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore stated that Outen-Fleming faces murder charges. Schmidt, 22, was shot in the chest around 1:30 a.m. on June 6 as he walked home from a watch party for an NBA Finals game. He was taken to a local hospital where he died shortly after.
Surveillance footage captured the incident, showing Schmidt demanding his stolen phone back before a gunshot is heard. The video depicts an individual throwing a cellphone and then being chased by Schmidt, who was subsequently shot.
Schmidt's father, Bill Schmidt, told ABC7 that his son was returning from watching the NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs with friends. He described his son as a "really good person" and expressed shock that he would chase after the individuals who stole his phone.
Billy Schmidt was a journalism student at Penn State and was scheduled to graduate in December.
