A 17-year-old identified as Monte Smith, charged in the fatal shooting at a Spirit Halloween store, had previously been released after another gun-related incident at a high school parking lot, according to reports. The Solano County District Attorney's Office is seeking to have Smith detained, citing his criminal history and the threat he poses to public safety.
Smith faces two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder in connection with the November 2 incident at Fairfield's Solano Town Center. The shooting left Constance Hages, a pregnant mother of four, dead and six others wounded. Prosecutors are requesting that Smith's case be moved to adult court.
Fairfield Police reported that among the six surviving victims, four remained hospitalized. A 19-year-old male was in critical condition, while three others were listed in stable condition.
Investigators believe Smith entered the Spirit Halloween store with the intent to target another customer. The gunfire struck Hages and the six other individuals before Smith fled the scene. A school resource officer recognized Smith from store surveillance footage, leading to his arrest.
Hages' aunt, Clanisha Morton, has organized a GoFundMe to support her niece's four children. As of Wednesday afternoon, the campaign had raised over $8,300 towards its $12,000 goal. "This heartbreaking loss has left behind four children, grieving parents, and a family trying to face a pain that words can barely hold," Morton stated.
