A former teacher at A.B. Paterson College in Queensland, Australia, faces charges for allegedly using artificial intelligence to generate child exploitation material. Dr. Robert John Thomas, 73, a former senior chemistry teacher, is accused of using his school laptop and AI software to create explicit images depicting staff and students.

Queensland Police have charged Thomas with making and possessing child exploitation material, as well as the misuse of a restricted computer. The investigation began on October 30 after explicit images reportedly appeared on a classroom screen. Authorities estimate that up to 50 alleged victims may be involved.

The college's principal, Joanne Sheehy, confirmed that Thomas was dismissed last year. The school is currently providing support to its students and staff. According to Sheehy, there is no evidence to suggest that the generated material was shared.

Dr. Thomas is scheduled to appear in court on August 6. The alleged offenses occurred while he was employed at the prestigious Gold Coast school.
