A widespread debate over the proper method for steeping tea bags has resurfaced online, potentially impacting the daily brew of thousands. The controversy, centered on whether to dunk or squeeze tea bags, gained traction after a Reddit post advised users to cease pressing their tea bags against the side of a mug with a spoon.

While many believe squeezing a tea bag yields a stronger flavor or extracts more of its essence, experts and tea enthusiasts contend that this practice releases bitter compounds into the drink. According to proponents of the debate, the desirable elements of tea, such as amino acids and caffeine, naturally infuse into hot water during a standard steeping process. However, applying pressure to the bag forces out tannic acid, which is typically retained within the tea leaves, resulting in a dry and bitter taste rather than an intensified one.

The revelation has led many regular tea drinkers to re-evaluate their preparation methods. Some commenters expressed relief, stating they now understood why their tea sometimes tasted bitter. Others described the tip as a "game-changer."

Conversely, some participants in the discussion argued that squeezing was not about flavor enhancement but about convenience and preventing a dripping tea bag when discarding it. For some, it was a matter of avoiding a mess on the counter, while for others, a preference for a darker tea color motivated the action.

Henry Boocock, Master Blender at Yorkshire Tea, confirmed that squeezing significantly alters the tea's chemical composition. He explained that steeping allows flavors to extract in a balanced manner, preserving the tea's natural sweetness and aroma. Squeezing, however, expels liquid trapped within the leaves that is often high in tannins, leading to a stronger but more bitter and astringent beverage. These compounds, like polyphenols and tannins, remain balanced during a normal steep but become concentrated and harsher when the bag is squeezed.

Boocock noted that while squeezing does not technically 'ruin' a tea, it shifts the flavor profile from smooth to dry and bitter. He offered a method for brewing a superior cup of tea: start with freshly drawn, fully boiled water, pour it over the tea bag, and let it steep for four to five minutes. Gently remove the bag, discard it, and then add milk or sugar as desired.
