Taylor Townsend Undergoes Emergency Surgery After US Open Win

Taylor Townsend, fresh off her US Open women's doubles victory that completed her career grand slam, has undergone emergency surgery for an unspecified medical issue. The withdrawal from the WTA 150 event in Guadalajara, Mexico, came just days after her triumph in New York.

Townsend competed in her first-round match in Guadalajara on Monday, winning against Tatjana Maria after being a set down. However, she subsequently withdrew from her Round of 16 match on Wednesday, resulting in a walkover for her opponent, Marta Kostyuk.

Townsend shared the news on her Instagram Stories, expressing her heartbreak over the withdrawal. "Welp.. this s*** definitely wasn't on my bingo card. Through trials and tribulations still I rise. I'll update yall soon," she wrote. A statement shared via the Guadalajara Open account further elaborated: "Because of emergency surgery, I am forced to withdraw for the GDL Open, and it breaks my heart."

Townsend had previously used her platform after her US Open win to highlight representation in tennis. "I take a lot of pride in this, being a Black woman here," she stated in her on-court speech at Arthur Ashe Stadium. She noted the significance of seeing "two Black women in the finals" and "two Black men in the semifinals" during the tournament, calling it "a phenomenal time for tennis, for inspiration, for representation."

Townsend also acknowledged tennis veteran Chanda Rubin, stating, "Chanda, it means a lot for you to be standing here as well because you paved the way for us, so thank you. This is a phenomenal time for tennis and it’s just getting started."
