As the summer social season unfolds, many are seeking a sun-kissed appearance, often turning to self-tanning products to achieve a golden glow without prolonged sun exposure.

Industry experts emphasize that achieving a perfect, streak-free tan relies heavily on proper preparation and consistent aftercare. Nicola Matthews, founder of Sienna X, advises exfoliating skin 24 to 48 hours before application, paying special attention to dry areas like the elbows, knees, and ankles. Shaving or waxing should also be completed at least a day prior to avoid potential dotting from open hair follicles. On the day of application, skin should be clean, dry, and free of moisturizers, deodorants, perfumes, or oils, as these can interfere with the tan's development.

Proper aftercare is presented as equally crucial for a lasting and even tan. Matthews suggests rinsing the tan off until the water runs completely clear and then gently patting the skin dry instead of rubbing. Daily moisturizing is recommended to keep skin hydrated, which helps the tan fade more evenly and can extend its life by several days.

Matthews also recommends selecting tanning products that contain hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, aloe vera, Q10, and squalane. These ingredients not only contribute to healthier-looking skin but also aid in more even development and natural fading. For individuals with dry or sensitive skin, avoiding formulas with high alcohol content is advised, as these can be drying.

Application tools can significantly impact the final result. Johanna Bennemann, International Marketing Manager at Tan-Luxe, highlights the importance of using quality tools for seamless application. A kabuki brush can be effective for buffing and blending product into difficult areas like hands, elbows, knees, and ankles, helping to diffuse color and create a flawless finish. For the rest of the body, a tanning mitt is recommended, applying the self-tan in light, even layers with circular motions.

Maintaining a tan while on holiday presents unique challenges due to factors like chlorine, salt water, and increased sweating. Bennemann reiterates the importance of daily hydration and rinsing off chlorine or salt water immediately after swimming. Applying SPF is essential for protecting skin from UV damage, which in turn helps the tan fade more evenly. For frequent swimmers or those spending extended time in the sun, gradual tanning products can be a convenient option for maintaining color throughout a vacation.

Choosing a self-tan that complements one's natural skin tone is key for a natural look, according to Tandae co-founder Georgia Davies. For those with cool or olive skin tones, a tan with a green undertone can act as a color corrector. Conversely, individuals with very fair or pale skin may benefit from a red-undertone tan, as the red tones can counteract dullness, resulting in a bronzed appearance. Davies also notes that for facial tanning, using non-comedogenic mousse formulas or products specifically designed for the face is advisable to avoid pore blockage and breakouts. Mist products can offer a lightweight, buildable coverage that feels natural and can improve the skin's overall appearance.
