Los Angeles Police Department headquarters experienced a temporary closure of its mailroom Tuesday morning after a suspicious substance was found in a letter. The discovery was made just before 7 a.m. by mailroom staff who reported the potentially dangerous material.
A hazardous materials team was dispatched to the scene, and adjoining areas, including the police center, were evacuated as a precaution. Roads surrounding the LAPD headquarters at 100 W. First St. were closed by fire units, causing traffic disruptions in downtown Los Angeles.
Despite the mailroom incident, the police building largely remained operational, with a scheduled LAPD Police Commission meeting proceeding as planned later in the morning. Officials stated that the substance could not be immediately identified, and further details were not available as an investigation is underway.
