A 32-year-old homeless man has been arrested on suspicion of arson in connection with a wildfire that ignited east of Fulton Road in Sonoma County, California, on Thursday. The Santa Rosa Police Department stated that a fire inspector observed the suspect covered in soot and discarding a lighter near the fire's origin. Firefighters quickly contained the blaze to approximately 50 by 70 feet before it could spread further.

The suspect was also taken into custody for a probation violation. This arrest marks the sixth related to arson investigations in Santa Rosa in recent weeks. Since June 30, fire and police investigators have responded to over 30 vegetation and suspicious fires within the city, with at least 17 believed to have been intentionally set.

Officials are urging community members to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity, emphasizing the role of public awareness in preventing larger fires and ensuring safety, especially as dry conditions persist.

The incident occurred in Sonoma County, a region known for its vineyards and wineries. Separately, fire crews in the county have been making progress on the Woodside Fire, which is burning off Highway 1 at Timber Cove. That fire, first reported around 1:40 p.m. on Thursday, has burned through more than 150 acres and prompted evacuations. Favorable weather conditions have aided containment efforts, with the Woodside Fire currently 40% contained, according to CAL FIRE. Resources are focused on identifying hotspots and reinforcing containment lines along Highway 1.
