Newly released surveillance video presented in court allegedly tracks the movements of Tyler Robinson, the man accused of assassinating Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, on the Utah Valley University campus on Sept. 10, 2025. The footage was shown during the preliminary hearing for Robinson, who faces charges of aggravated murder, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty.
Investigators used campus security cameras to reconstruct Robinson's alleged movements from his arrival on campus hours before the shooting to his departure afterward. Agent David Hull of the Utah State Bureau of Investigation testified that the compilation of videos aimed to show a figure, identified as Robinson, accessing the roof of the Losee Center for Student Success, where prosecutors contend the fatal shot was fired.
Campus Movements Detailed
According to Hull's testimony, a vehicle believed to belong to Robinson arrived at a UVU parking garage around 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 10. Hull stated the vehicle matched records for Robinson and that the driver, identified as Robinson, was wearing a red or maroon T-shirt, gray or olive shorts, and Converse shoes.
Investigators tracked Robinson to an amphitheater area where he reportedly interacted with Turning Point USA representatives before returning to the garage and leaving campus around 9:25 a.m.
Robinson allegedly returned to campus on foot shortly after 10 a.m., wearing similar clothing and carrying a blue backpack. He was tracked to a Chick-fil-A in the Sorensen Center, where he ate, and then proceeded across campus. Hull testified that Robinson crossed Campus Drive into a wooded area and returned to campus without the backpack.
Before 11 a.m., Hull said Robinson moved through campus buildings before reaching a railing that provided access to the roof of the Losee Center. He then allegedly descended via stairs and left campus before 11 a.m.
Return to Campus and Alleged Shooting
Around 12:15 p.m., Hull testified that Robinson returned to campus again, this time in different clothing but wearing the same shoes. Surveillance video reportedly showed Robinson ascending stairs in a parking structure, moving across Campus Drive, and approaching the Losee Center. He then allegedly appeared on an exterior staircase leading to the building's roof and "rolls over the railing onto the roof of the building."
At approximately 12:23 p.m., Hull stated the figure ran across the rooftop towards the southwest corner, crouched, and crawled to the edge of the building, lying prone before the shot was fired. Following the shot, the figure allegedly stood, moved north across the roof, and headed toward the northeast corner.
Prosecutors clarified that the video did not capture the actual shooting but showed the individual moving into position before the shot and leaving immediately afterward. Hull testified that seconds after the shot, the figure descended from the roof, landed on a grassy area, and moved toward Campus Drive, appearing to carry an object in his hand.
During cross-examination, Hull acknowledged he could not definitively see a gun in the video. He described the object as long and concealed or in a bag, which, based on his training, could be a firearm. Investigators also noted that an apparent limp or unusual gait observed earlier was no longer visible after the shooting.
Discovery of Weapon and Further Investigation
Following the shooting, investigators identified a wooded area where they believed evidence might be located. Hull testified that a rifle was discovered in this wooded area, which Robinson was seen entering on at least two occasions: during his second visit to campus and again during the visit when the shooting occurred.
In the early morning hours of Sept. 11, surveillance video showed a vehicle identified as Robinson’s at an intersection. An officer on security detail noted the vehicle's license plate. Later, when information emerged about a similar vehicle potentially being involved, the license plate was run, and the vehicle was found to be registered to Tyler Robinson and his mother. The officer reported interacting with a male he believed to be Tyler Robinson.
Legal Proceedings
Judge Tony Graf sanctioned media members after an exhibit was inadvertently shown and broadcast during the proceedings. Graf stated he did not want to make "snap decisions" and initially ruled that no further exhibits would be shown for the remainder of the day, though the final video compilation was later allowed as an exception.
Oral arguments on the preliminary hearing evidence are scheduled for Sept. 1. Robinson has not yet entered a plea. Kirk's family has urged the court to move the case forward without delay, citing the "overwhelming evidence" presented and the approaching one-year anniversary of Kirk's death.
