Karen, a mother of two from Brynna, Rhondda Cynon Taf, who had previously undergone a heart transplant ten years ago, was facing stage three kidney failure. The medication she required for her heart transplant had damaged her kidneys, a complication she had anticipated.

After discovering that neither her friends nor family were a match for a kidney donation, Karen turned to Facebook to share her situation. She explained that she has a rare blood type and that the kidney failure was significantly impacting her life, emphasizing her desire to be present for her children, including her now 22-year-old and her one-year-old grandchild.

Gary, a 60-year-old security guard from Tredegar, Blaenau Gwent, came across Karen's post by chance. He was moved by her mention of her children and felt a strong urge to help, drawing a parallel between Karen's age and her youngest child's age to his own grandson. He stated that he would want a stranger to come forward if his own daughter were in a similar situation and that it would be selfish not to offer assistance. Gary decided he could spare one of his kidneys, believing Karen needed it more than he needed two.

Despite never having met Karen, Gary volunteered to be tested. He underwent a series of comprehensive medical and psychological evaluations. The transplant surgery took place on July 15 at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, a procedure that lasted six hours. Gary reported having no second thoughts throughout the process.

Following the transplant, Karen reported feeling "100 times better." Her husband, Matthew, expressed profound gratitude to Gary, highlighting that such acts of kindness offer hope in a sometimes difficult world. He stated that they could never repay Gary for the gift of life he provided, allowing Karen to continue being a mother to their children and live the life she deserves. Karen described the act as "mind-blowing," expressing immense gratitude for someone who underwent extensive testing and surgery for a stranger.

Their 17-year-old son, Brandon, shared his relief and happiness at seeing his mother recovering well, noting that she looked better than she had in a long time. He acknowledged the fear associated with his mother's surgeries but emphasized the importance of hope and the existence of good people.
