Steve Belichick Resigns as UNC Defensive Coordinator Amidst Program Investigation

Steve Belichick, son of NFL coach Bill Belichick, will resign as the University of North Carolina's defensive coordinator effective October 27. His resignation comes as the university announced Thursday that it has concluded an investigation into allegations concerning the football program's culture and climate.

Belichick, 39, has been on medical leave since August 6. His departure follows an inquiry that reportedly focused on whether he used or provided drugs to at least one player during his time at the university. UNC stated that its investigation found "certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina's values and standards of conduct." The school characterized these actions as "isolated in scope and not a systemic failure" but did not provide specific details.

This development marks another instance of upheaval within the UNC football program. Earlier this month, Mike Lombardi resigned as the team's general manager. Lombardi was also reportedly a subject of the probe following a complaint from a former front office employee. Steve Belichick, who previously served as a longtime assistant under his father with the New England Patriots, had been a part of the UNC coaching staff.
