Stadium Owner Robert Kraft Responds to Ed Sheeran Tour Controversy, Pledges $2 Million Donation

Robert Kraft, owner of the Kraft Group which includes Gillette Stadium, has addressed the controversy surrounding the cancellation of rapper Macklemore's performances on Ed Sheeran's tour. Macklemore was dropped from the tour after delivering a speech in support of Palestine during his opening sets on September 4 and 5 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Macklemore claimed in an Instagram statement that Sheeran informed him Kraft had issued an ultimatum: either Macklemore would be removed, or the entire tour would be canceled.

In his own statement, Kraft emphasized his commitment to building bridges and protecting all lives. He stated that Sheeran had contacted him, requesting that he match Sheeran's $2 million donation to aid the region amid a humanitarian crisis. "Earlier today, before Macklemore challenged me to match his donation, Ed called me and asked me to commit $2 million to match his donation to aid in the region to fight this humanitarian crisis," Kraft said. He also noted his decades-long support for initiatives that create opportunities for Palestinians and bring young Israelis and Palestinians together.

It remains unclear which specific organization will receive the donations.

Ed Sheeran previously commented on the situation, asserting that he does not use his professional platform for political stances. He wrote on Instagram, "I am not complicit. I have my personal views on this devastating conflict. Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn't mean I don't have them, and it doesn't mean I don't care." He added that while he respects Macklemore's "strength of purpose," there are various approaches to advocating for peace.

The controversy has also brought renewed attention to a 2014 performance where Macklemore wore a costume that some critics deemed an anti-Semitic caricature. Macklemore had previously apologized for the costume, stating he had no malicious intent and was unaware of the stereotype.

Amidst the fallout, several of Sheeran's supporting acts have withdrawn from the tour. American singer Finneas, Irish performer Aaron Rowe, Danish band Lukas Graham, and Irish band Beoga have all announced their departures, citing solidarity with Palestine and a refusal to perform in venues that silence advocacy for the Palestinian people. Beoga specifically stated that Macklemore had been silenced by "Zionist lobbies."

Irish radio station Classic Hits Radio announced it would be removing Sheeran's music from its playlist for the foreseeable future, stating the decision was made to listen to their audience and stand alongside Irish artists making decisions based on their convictions.
