Millions of residents across the Southeastern United States are contending with a significant risk of flooding as tropical moisture fuels thunderstorms and heavy downpours. A weather pattern bringing wet conditions has taken hold of the region, with tropical moisture already surging into Florida and the Carolinas.
These conditions are expected to produce thunderstorms capable of more intense rainfall than typical summer showers. A Level 2 out of 4 flash flood risk is in effect for coastal South Carolina, specifically near Charleston, for Saturday. A broader Level 1 threat extends from Miami, Florida, to Wilmington, North Carolina.
Localized rainfall amounts exceeding 2 to 3 inches are possible in areas where storms move slowly. This increases the potential for flash flooding across far northern Florida, southeast Georgia, and the Carolinas on Saturday. Widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are anticipated through Sunday across central Florida, coastal Georgia, and South Carolina.
Despite the flood concerns, the anticipated rainfall is expected to help alleviate drought conditions in Florida and southern Georgia, which have experienced an unusually dry period since last summer.
