Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., was hospitalized Saturday after experiencing a stroke, according to a statement from his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt.

Murphy began feeling numbness in his arm while attending his son's hockey game. He was initially taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring.

"He is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery," Herwitt said. "Murphy is responding well to treatment and doctors are encouraged by his progress."

Murphy, who is not a candidate in the upcoming midterm elections, has been actively campaigning for other Democratic candidates.
