Seeking.com has implemented an AI-powered selfie verification system to combat fraud on dating platforms, announcing that it has successfully blocked over 90% of detected scammers. The initiative aims to expose individuals who misrepresent themselves on dating applications and deter romance scams, which cost consumers over $1.14 billion in 2023, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
The platform's AI tool analyzes users' facial features, demeanor, and conversations to identify deceptive behavior. Since implementing the verification in January 2025, Seeking.com reports blocking 53,000 scammers before they could initiate contact. This represents a 90.3% reduction in imposters on the platform.
Brandon Wade, co-CEO of Seeking.com, stated that the company's goal is to address the real victims of romance scams, emphasizing that "statistics hide real victims, real pain, and real money lost." He called on the wider industry to "expose the faces, eliminate the fraud, and stop pretending safety is a side project."
Seeking.com's research indicates that romance scam operations are frequently linked to countries including China, India, Indonesia, Romania, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The platform hopes its strategy will encourage other dating services to adopt similar measures to protect their users from fraudulent activity.
