The second teenage victim of a mass shooting that occurred early Monday near Moss Landing State Beach in California has been identified as 15-year-old Marco Antonio Perez. His family is experiencing "immense pain" following his death, alongside that of 13-year-old Nathaniel Flores, who was also killed in the incident.
Perez and Flores were found dead by Monterey County sheriff's deputies responding to reports of gunshots just before 2 a.m. Monday. A GoFundMe page established on behalf of Perez states he "tragically and unjustly lost his life," and that his family is unprepared for such a loss.
Another GoFundMe created by the Steinbeck Tigers Youth Football & Cheer organization mourns the loss of Flores, a player for their team. The organization noted that Flores would have turned 14 on Friday.
Two other individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting. One was transported to a local hospital, and another also sought medical attention.
Investigators found trash, alcohol, red cups, and a speaker at the scene, but have not released details regarding suspects or motives. Monterey County Sheriff Tina M. Nieto stated that detectives are working to determine the circumstances of the shooting and urged anyone with information to come forward. The sheriff's department has indicated there is no active threat to the Moss Landing community.
Both victims were from Salinas, California. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
