The Scottish Football Association (SFA) is reportedly close to appointing a new head coach, with a preferred candidate identified and an announcement anticipated within the next two weeks. This timeline would allow the new manager to be in place for Scotland's opening matches in the Nations League.

Steve Clarke resigned from his position earlier this summer following Scotland's exit from the World Cup group stage. His departure concluded a seven-year tenure with the national team. The search for his successor is being overseen by Craig Mulholland, who joined the SFA as chief football officer in May.

Mulholland has reportedly spoken with a broad range of potential candidates, both domestically and internationally. Interviews have been conducted as the SFA moves towards a final decision. It remains unclear whether the incoming coach will be Scottish or from abroad.

Steven Naismith, who served as Clarke's assistant, has previously indicated his expectation to remain with the national team setup under new leadership. The team's first Nations League fixture is scheduled away to Slovenia on September 26.
