A San Francisco cafe recently found itself at the center of controversy after utilizing artificial intelligence to generate images for its menu advertisements. Grind and Unwind, a cafe that opened a few months prior, displayed computer-generated images of its food and drinks in its front window, a move that quickly led to online criticism and a wave of negative reviews.

Owner Lyndsey Lozano stated that the AI images were intended as a temporary, eye-catching display while the business was establishing itself. However, the advertisements drew ire from some customers who felt they constituted false advertising. One Yelp reviewer commented that the AI-generated food images did not represent the actual products well, suggesting that a simpler logo on black would be preferable if the space needed filling.

Another customer expressed concern about the menu being entirely AI-generated, noting that the depiction of a croissant resembled a "Lego" and questioning how patrons could determine what the real product looked like. This sentiment of misrepresentation was amplified by negative online feedback.

The backlash extended beyond online reviews, with one individual spray-painting the word "seriously" outside the cafe. The graffiti has since been covered.

In response to the public reaction, Grind and Unwind has removed all AI-generated artwork. The cafe now displays its actual food and drinks in the window, offering customers a more accurate preview of its offerings. Lozano indicated that the cafe is now focusing on its pastries, coffee, and burgers, aiming to create a welcoming space for locals.

The incident highlights a public preference for authentic representations, particularly when it comes to food and beverages, despite the increasing prevalence of AI technology.
