Former ESPN analyst Ryan Clark has contested the network's reported account of his dismissal, asserting that he was instructed to leave the air mid-broadcast during an episode of NFL Live this week.
According to initial reports, Clark, 46, was informed of his layoff during a commercial break of the NFL Live recording. While some reports suggested he was not forced off the air and that he and ESPN mutually agreed it was best for him not to finish the show, Clark has since stated that he was asked if he should conclude his participation early, and the answer was affirmative.
"I wasn't forced?" Clark posted on X. "I ask, 'should I be done now?' The answer was 'yes.'"
Clark was let go as part of a new round of layoffs at ESPN. His departure from NFL Live occurred during the recording, with the final 10 minutes of the show proceeding without him.
Stephen A. Smith, a longtime colleague of Clark's, expressed his disappointment with the decision. Smith stated that he had advised ESPN against parting ways with Clark, whom he considers "arguably the best NFL analyst in America." Smith acknowledged the business realities of layoffs but emphasized his unhappiness with this particular move.
Clark's dismissal comes as ESPN undergoes further staff reductions. Other notable figures departing the network include former NFL MVP Cam Newton, NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero, baseball commentator Karl Ravech, analyst Charles Davis, SportsCenter personality David Lloyd, and injury expert Stephania Bell.
