The New York Rangers have acquired veteran goaltender Joonas Korpisalo from the Boston Bruins, bolstering their depth at the position. The team announced the move Wednesday as the free agency window opened.
In exchange for Korpisalo, the Rangers sent a 2028 fourth-round draft pick and forward prospect Kalle Vaisanen to Boston. The expectation is that Korpisalo will compete with 24-year-old Dylan Garand for the backup goaltender position behind starter Igor Shesterkin.
Korpisalo, 32, has played in 334 NHL games over an 11-year career. He holds a career record of 140-126-38 with a .900 save percentage and a 3.06 goals-against average. Last season with Boston, he recorded a .894 save percentage, saving 13.49 goals above expected, according to Evolving-Hockey.
Korpisalo is under contract for the next two seasons with a $4 million cap hit annually. His contract includes a 10-team no-trade list.
