The Las Vegas Raiders have opened the 21-day practice window for wide receiver Dont’e Thornton Jr., who has been on injured reserve since the start of the season. This move provides a potential boost to the team's receiving options, which have been thinned by injuries.
With both Jack Bech on injured reserve and Jalen Nailor still not cleared for practice following a concussion in Week 4, Thornton's return could offer much-needed depth. The Raiders have three weeks to evaluate Thornton in practice before deciding whether to activate him to the 53-man roster. However, returning to practice does not guarantee he will be available for Sunday's game against the Patriots.
Thornton's potential addition could provide quarterback Kirk Cousins with another target, complementing tight ends Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer, as well as running back Ashton Jeanty. This could open up the offense and create more opportunities for other players.
During his final season at Tennessee, Thornton showcased big-play ability, catching 26 passes for 661 yards and six touchdowns, averaging an impressive 25.4 yards per reception. This talent made him an intriguing prospect for developmental purposes.
Thornton's immediate challenge will be to adapt to coach Klint Kubiak's offense and demonstrate his readiness to contribute meaningfully after his extended absence. He must prove he can handle the physical demands of practice, execute his assignments, and build chemistry with Cousins to earn playing time.
