Candice Grey, a midday weekend host for the contemporary Christian radio network The Joy FM, sustained severe injuries in an electric bicycle crash on May 16 in Florida. The incident occurred while she was riding with her husband and children when her e-bike struck a crack in the sidewalk, launching her over the handlebars and onto the pavement.
Grey suffered fractures to both sides of her jaw, a fractured chin, and a cracked ear canal. She underwent surgery and remained hospitalized for seven days. Nearly three months after the accident, Grey revealed to Fox 13 that her decision not to wear a helmet was influenced by a desire to avoid messing up her hair. "When you're riding a regular bike, and you have an accident, you might get some road rash, or different things, but when you are going at speeds that a motorcycle would be going at, the damage can just be so much worse," Grey told the outlet. She contrasted this with the practice of motorcyclists wearing full-face helmets, noting that many e-bike riders do not.
Grey, who stated she is experienced with e-bikes, emphasized that accidents can happen to even seasoned riders. Following her hospitalization, she shared images of her family's support and her own recovery, including wearing a neck brace and bandages. She returned to her hosting duties on June 16, though still with a sling on her arm.
Her story comes as many children return to school. The American Automobile Association (AAA) has advised both riders and drivers to remain aware of their surroundings and share the road. The organization also underscored the importance of helmet use. In Florida, riders over 16 are not legally required to wear a helmet if the e-bike meets certain specifications regarding motor power and pedal functionality.
