Podiatrists recommend several products and practices to enhance walking comfort and address foot pain, emphasizing the importance of proper footwear, hygiene, and specialized care.

Before purchasing over-the-counter foot gadgets or insoles, experts advise consulting a podiatrist. Dr. Patrick McEneaney, CEO of Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists, notes that many available inserts may not be suitable for individual foot types. He also stresses the importance of wearing shoes appropriate for both the activity and one's specific foot structure.

Footwear and Socks

Selecting the right shoes is crucial. Dr. Gary Evans, a podiatrist based in New York City, previously recommended Skechers "Glide Step" sneakers for older adults, citing their breathable mesh construction, removable arch-fit insole, and podiatrist-designed shape for all-day comfort. These shoes are designed to promote natural momentum with each step and are available in multiple colors and sizes for men and women.

Socks also play a significant role in foot comfort and health. Dr. Evans suggests moisture-wicking socks to prevent blisters and seamless options to reduce pressure on the toes. Dr. Michelle Castiello, a podiatrist at Scarsdale Medical Group, advises against cotton socks for walking or exercise, recommending instead those made from merino wool, nylon, or polyester, which wick moisture away from the skin.

Seamless, moisture-wicking athletic socks are available in various materials and designs. For instance, polyester blend athletic socks with a seamless toe, arch support band, and padded heel offer comfort and come in multiple colors and sizes.

Foot Care and Pain Relief

Regular foot hygiene is recommended after walks. Dr. Castiello suggests washing and drying feet thoroughly, especially between the toes, to prevent fungal infections. A daily defense foot wash containing tea tree oil and Epsom salts can aid in cleaning and deodorizing.

For those experiencing foot pain, such as from plantar fasciitis, arch support orthotic inserts can be beneficial. These insoles often feature a high arch and deep heel cup to support correct foot positioning and protect the heel from impact.

Epsom salt foot soaks are also suggested for soothing muscle and joint aches. Dr. McEneaney recommends warm soaks with pure Epsom salts, avoiding any products with perfumes or dyes. These soaks can be particularly helpful for overuse injuries that may arise from increased walking or activity on inclines.

Moisturizing the feet before a long walk can help prevent blisters, cracking, and calluses. Applying creams or ointments to areas prone to friction, like bunions and hammertoes, is advised. A thin layer of Vaseline on the back of the heels can also prevent blisters.

Pre- and Post-Walk Routines

Trimming toenails straight across is important to prevent them from rubbing against the front of sneakers, which can cause pain or damage. Specialized toenail clippers designed for easier use are available.

Stretching after walking can improve flexibility, circulation, and relieve pain. Using a yoga mat can make post-walk stretching more comfortable and accessible.
