A routine maintenance flight over Northwest England took an unexpected turn when the pilot traced the words "I'm bored" across the sky. The unusual message and flight path were visible on the online flight-tracking website Flightradar24.
The Ravenair-operated Piper Tomahawk aircraft departed from Liverpool on a Saturday morning for what was described as a two-hour maintenance test flight. The plane flew over the Wirral peninsula and Cheshire before returning to Liverpool. Screenshots of the flight's trajectory quickly circulated on social media.
According to Wes Barrett, operations manager at Ravenair, the pilot was a flying instructor in his 20s conducting a routine test flight after a part had been replaced on the aircraft. Barrett told the BBC that the pilot was "literally a bit bored as it was just a test flight," but noted that spelling out the message required considerable skill.
Experts have commented that such a maneuver demonstrates a pilot's focus and precision. Gary Leff, a travel industry expert, noted that test flights are not passenger flights and that writing a message like "I'm bored" indicates the pilot was not distracted. He added that the most demanding aspects of flying typically occur during takeoff and landing, with less manual control required at cruise altitude in modern aircraft.
The flight's unusual display prompted a range of reactions online, with some users praising the pilot's skill and others making lighthearted remarks about the message. One social media user called it an "adult version of Etch-a-Sketch."
