Actor Patrick Dempsey announced Wednesday that he will not pursue a U.S. Senate seat in Maine, ending speculation that he was being considered to replace Democratic nominee Graham Platner. Platner is currently evaluating his campaign's future following a sexual assault allegation from a former girlfriend, which he denies.
Dempsey, who grew up in the Lewiston-Auburn area and founded The Dempsey Center for cancer care, stated in an editorial for the Portland Press Herald that while public service is honorable, he believes he can make a greater contribution through his established work. He emphasized that Maine faces significant challenges in housing, healthcare, and education, and that any candidate for the Senate should aim for meaningful change and integrity in governance.
Dempsey did not endorse any specific individuals considering a run to replace Platner but called for a candidate who offers a new approach to governing. The actor, known for his role in "Grey's Anatomy," did not name Platner in his editorial. Platner, an oyster farmer and Marine veteran, secured the Democratic nomination in June to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the November election.
