The New York City Marathon's official app and website suffered significant technical issues on Sunday, preventing millions of spectators from tracking runners during the event. The platform, crucial for fans to follow the progress of participants, experienced multiple crashes and error messages throughout the day. This malfunction occurred as a record 60,000 athletes participated in the race.
Users expressed their frustration on social media, with one X user calling the situation a "total embarrassment for you guys and an insult to the 2m+ spectators relying on your tools to track their loved ones." The New York Road Runners (NYRR), the organization behind the marathon, acknowledged the problem and tweeted, "We are working on this." They directed users to a live results page that remained functional.
This marks not the first time the platform has faced issues. A Reddit user noted, "They had the same issue last year too." The commenter further questioned the organizers' preparedness, stating, "At what point do you not realize you need more hosting capacity when the race is coming up? It should have been obvious it would happen again."
Normally, the app provides real-time split times and location updates for runners, who are equipped with tracking devices as they race through the city's five boroughs. The failure of this system meant that spectators, both local and those following from afar, could not access these essential features.
