Researchers from the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization (BFRO) are examining a peculiar sighting in an Onondaga County, New York, pond, an anomaly they have dubbed the "Syracuse Figure." The creature, estimated to be around 4 feet 9 inches tall, has sparked debate among investigators, who are considering possibilities ranging from a small Bigfoot to an unidentified human.
Matthew Moneymaker, a representative for the BFRO, shared images of the figure on Facebook, noting that while it doesn't resemble a typical Bigfoot, its location and behavior—wading in a pond—are more consistent with known Bigfoot habitats than human activity. Moneymaker suggested that what appears to be skin might actually be wet fur lying flat.
The images were taken by a hiker in a relatively remote pond in Onondaga County. A BFRO investigator in the area became intrigued and subsequently looked into the matter, first to verify the credibility of the witness and then to identify the figure. The BFRO has concluded that the images are legitimate and the witness is credible, but the identity of the figure remains unknown.
"We are posting the photos of the Syracuse Figure in hopes of being able to identify him/it," Moneymaker stated. "It might be an old man, or it might not be. If it's a man then we assume someone in or near Onondage County will recognize him."
This investigation comes amid other recent Bigfoot reports in Pennsylvania. The BFRO was already in the process of examining those accounts when the "Syracuse Figure" emerged in early August.
