Jacob Morley, a convicted murderer serving a life sentence, was recaptured in Missouri on Tuesday following an escape from a Tennessee prison and a multi-state manhunt.
Morley, 28, escaped from the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, Tennessee, on Oct. 25, according to authorities. He was serving his sentence for the 2022 murder of a co-worker, Cody Birchfield. Birchfield's body was discovered in a box under Morley's home after he had been missing for several weeks.
After his escape, Morley was seen on surveillance video stealing a truck from a nearby farm. The stolen vehicle was later found abandoned in Marion, Illinois, approximately 120 miles north of the prison. The manhunt involved law enforcement agencies searching areas near the complex.
Morley's escape highlights ongoing issues within the Tennessee prison system. The Northwest Correctional Complex has seen multiple violent incidents involving inmates and staff in recent years. In July, a grand jury returned indictments related to five inmate killings and other violent acts at the facility.
These concerns were amplified following the September failed execution of inmate Christa Pike. In the wake of that event, the Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada resigned after less than three years on the job. State Sen. Tom Hatcher commented on the need for new leadership within the department, stating, "We need new leadership. We’re doing oversight work behind the scenes about several of our prisons."
