A group of at least 20 individuals looted a Superior Grocers store in South Los Angeles early Sunday morning amid an illegal street takeover. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. near Manchester Avenue and San Pedro Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Employees working at the time of the raid were reportedly forced to flee to the second floor of the store and barricade themselves as the group entered and ransacked the business. No injuries were reported.

Police stated that the amount of stolen merchandise is currently unknown, and it remains unclear when the store will be able to reopen. Authorities apprehended one individual at the scene.

The burglary is the most recent in a pattern of smash-and-grab thefts associated with illegal street takeovers that have become prevalent in Los Angeles. In recent weeks, AutoZone locations in East Los Angeles, Watts, and Downey have been targeted multiple times. A pharmacy in Boyle Heights was also subjected to a similar break-in.

Law enforcement has established a task force to address the street takeovers and the accompanying property crimes. Despite these efforts, businesses continue to be targeted by large groups during these events, which often involve vehicles blocking intersections.
