What began as an alleged $3,100 theft of approximately 350 cinnamon rolls from a Florida bakery concluded with an unexpected revelation: the delivery driver was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol.
Julie Pierre, owner of Roll & Dough in Sunrise, Florida, reported that an Uber courier hired on Aug. 22 failed to deliver the order of viral cinnamon rolls to the Yellow Green Farmers Market in Hollywood. Initially unable to contact the driver, Pierre suspected the merchandise had been stolen and shared the incident with her social media followers, attracting significant attention.
Sunrise police, however, determined that no theft occurred. According to Sunrise Police Officer Victor Fortune, the delivery driver was stopped and taken into custody by U.S. Border Patrol in Hollywood while en route to the market.
Border Patrol identified the driver as Ivan Dario Rico Molano, a Colombian citizen. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stated that agents stopped a vehicle on southbound Interstate 95 around 9 a.m. on Aug. 22 after a records check indicated the registered owner was an undocumented immigrant. During the stop, Molano admitted to being in the U.S. without legal authorization. CBP records show he entered the country legally in May 2021 but overstayed his authorized period.
Molano was arrested and transported to a Border Patrol station for processing. The cinnamon rolls remained in the vehicle, which Molano was permitted to have another person take possession of. This individual subsequently contacted Sunrise police to arrange for the return of the goods.
On Aug. 27, five days after the scheduled delivery, Sunrise police recovered the cinnamon rolls and their containers and returned them to Pierre. However, by that time, the pastries could no longer be sold and had to be discarded. Pierre stated that the bakery remained out $3,100, regardless of whether the incident was classified as a theft.
Pierre later corrected the initial accusation of theft after being informed by police of the driver's apprehension by Border Patrol. In a statement on Instagram, the bakery apologized for describing the incident as a theft before knowing all the circumstances, emphasizing that their report to the police did not lead to Molano's arrest.
