British right-wing political commentator Milo Yiannopoulos has been deported from the United States after being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Yiannopoulos, 41, was sent back to his home country on Friday, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

A DHS spokesperson stated that Yiannopoulos, described as "an illegal alien from the United Kingdom," had been "sent back to his home country."

The commentator, who has called himself "the most fabulous supervillain on the internet," arrived in the U.S. in May 2019 and "chose to overstay his welcome in violation of our nation's laws," the DHS said. He was arrested on August 27 after arriving at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport.

Yiannopoulos, who grew up in Kent, England, was an early supporter of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election, notably headlining an event called Gays for Trump during the Republican National Convention that year. He later worked for rapper Kanye West in his unsuccessful presidential bid in 2020 and also for former Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Though he has since become a critic of Trump, Yiannopoulos has voiced continued support for the former president's agenda. In March, he wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that Trump had "lost his way, bought off by foreign interests."

Yiannopoulos has frequently courted controversy for his remarks on various groups, including transgender people, Muslims, Black Lives Matter activists, feminists, and gay people. He has identified as gay but now describes himself as "ex-gay."
