Melania Trump appeared publicly on Thursday to host Russian and Ukrainian officials at the White House, celebrating a six-day humanitarian ceasefire she helped broker in the city of Oleshky, Ukraine. The event took place just two days after midterm election results were seen as a significant setback for her husband, former President Donald Trump.
The ceasefire, which ran from October 27 to November 1, facilitated the evacuation of nearly 800 people from Oleshky, a city in Ukraine that has been under Russian occupation since February 2022. This operation marks a diplomatic effort led by the former First Lady.
Oleshky has faced severe shortages of essential resources, including food and medical supplies, according to reports from the Associated Press. Residents have been contending with a lack of electricity, heat, and running water. The city was heavily impacted by the collapse of the Kakhovka Dam in June 2023, an event believed to have been caused by a Russian military explosion, which flooded approximately 90 percent of Oleshky.
Melania Trump's attention was reportedly drawn to the plight of Oleshky residents during her attendance at the United Nations General Assembly in September. Her office announced the brokering of the localized ceasefire on October 23. This initiative follows her previous efforts to reunite Ukrainian children with their families after they were taken by Russian forces. She previously wrote a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin advocating for the children affected by the conflict.
