First Lady Melania Trump did not attend the White House election night event on Tuesday, opting instead to focus on her initiative for a Russia-Ukraine ceasefire.
A White House source confirmed to the Daily Mail that Trump remained away as President Donald Trump and his aides gathered to watch the midterm results, a night where Republicans saw their anticipated gains in Congress diminish.
Melania Trump's social media activity during the evening centered on an upcoming White House event to highlight the ceasefire in Oleshky, a city in Ukraine that has been under Russian control. Representatives from Russia and Ukraine were expected to attend the event on Thursday.
Administration officials confirmed the planned gathering, which aims to address the humanitarian situation in Oleshky. The First Lady had become personally involved in brokering the ceasefire talks after learning about conditions in the area during her trip to the United Nations General Assembly in September.
"The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster," Melania Trump stated. "Oleshky's remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water."
She detailed that residents wishing to evacuate would receive support and transportation, with options to go to either Russia or Ukraine. President Trump had previously endorsed her efforts, telling reporters that she had contacted officials from both nations to initiate the talks.
"What she wants to do is save children. And that's her focus. Both sides are cooperating with her, so she's doing a very good job," he said.
Reports indicated that approximately 2,000 people were living in Oleshky when the temporary truce took effect. The First Lady celebrated news of evacuations, noting that the ceasefire had allowed residents freedom of movement and access to essential supplies.
"The ceasefire across Oleshky and the surrounding Kherson region has provided residents with the freedom to move, access to food, clean water, medicine, plus a renewed sense of dignity without the constant threat of attack," she wrote on Saturday.
Melania Trump had largely stayed off the campaign trail during the midterms, concentrating instead on her own initiatives focused on women and children.
