Matt Baker, known for his work on Countryfile, has introduced a new member to his family farm: a sheepdog puppy named Ted. This joyous addition comes almost a year after the passing of his beloved Border Collie, Bob, a loss that deeply affected Baker and his family.
Baker, 48, shared that Ted is settling in well at their farm in the Durham countryside, where he and his wife Nicola also raise livestock. The couple's children, Luke, 18, and Molly, 16, are also part of the farm's daily life, which has been documented on their Channel 4 series, Our Farm in the Dales. Ted is expected to make an appearance in future episodes of the show.
"Ted is very good, he's doing well, and he's settling in," Baker told the Express. "We're doing some light obedience training at the moment, but he's not doing a huge amount at this stage because you've got to let them be puppies."
He also mentioned that Ivy, the family's miniature Dachshund, is playing a role in raising the puppy. "Ivy, our little miniature Dachshund, she's sort of helping to rear him if you like, and the pair of them are getting on like a house on fire," Baker added. "He's a beautiful boy with a lovely nature. I've no doubt he'll be a great sheepdog. That's what his future holds, as well as doubling up as a household dog."
Baker had previously spoken about the profound impact of Bob's death, stating that it "took a lot to get over" the loss of his canine companion. Bob had been with Baker through significant life events, including the upbringing of his children and changes on the family farm.
In May of this year, Baker shared an emotional tribute to Bob on Instagram, revealing that the dog had passed away some time prior. He described Bob as his "ultimate companion" and thanked him for the joy he brought to their family. "It's with a very heavy heart that I'm letting you know our wonderful Bob is no longer with us," Baker wrote at the time. "He's been gone a while but I haven't been able to talk about it as I've been finding it so incredibly sad."
Baker reflected on the deep bond between humans and dogs, noting, "I'm sure all you dog lovers will agree the reason we love our dogs so much is because the only time they break our hearts is when they leave us. RIP Bob X."
His wife Nicola echoed his sentiments in the comments, writing, "What a dog. We miss him so much." Fans also shared their condolences, with many relating to the profound grief of losing a beloved pet.
