Marshawn Lynch has participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge to support former NFL running back Chris Johnson, who recently revealed he is battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Lynch completed the challenge outside Allegiant Stadium in a video he posted to Instagram.
"I stand with you. I’m here for you," Lynch said in the video, addressing Johnson.
Johnson had publicly called for the resurgence of the Ice Bucket Challenge, which gained widespread popularity in the summer of 2014 as a way to raise awareness for ALS. In his own Instagram post, Johnson stated, "The support you’ve shown me over the last few days has meant more than I can put into words. Seeing this video reminded me of something powerful. Years ago, the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge united millions of people around one cause and helped change the fighting against this disease. Today, I’m asking you to help me do it again."
Johnson had nominated Lynch, along with former NFL teammates LenDale White and Adam Jones, to participate in the challenge. White and Jones played with Johnson for the Tennessee Titans between 2008 and 2013.
Johnson was diagnosed with ALS last year but announced his diagnosis publicly on "Good Morning America" earlier this week. During his NFL career, the former first-round draft pick amassed 9,561 rushing yards over 10 seasons. He was recognized as Offensive Player of the Year in 2009 after rushing for over 2,000 yards in a single season.
