Manchester United has made midfield recruitment a central focus of their summer transfer activity, a strategy necessitated by the increased demands of participating in the Champions League. Manager Michael Carrick emphasized the importance of achieving balance within the midfield as the team faces a compressed fixture list.

Last season, Manchester United had fewer midweek commitments in the latter half of the season, leading to extended gaps between matches. However, with Champions League qualification, the team is now set for a demanding schedule, beginning with five games in 16 days before the first international break. Should the team advance in the EFL Cup, midweek fixtures could continue uninterrupted until Christmas, making player rotation a certainty.

This situation has put a spotlight on the club's midfield options. The departures of Casemiro and the long-term injury to Manuel Ugarte have thinned the central midfield ranks. Going into the summer transfer window, the senior central midfielders available were Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes, and Mason Mount, with Fernandes and Mount typically playing more advanced roles.

Following failed attempts to sign Elliott Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, Manchester United moved to acquire Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48 million and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for £35 million. Santos, a 22-year-old Brazilian, has shown early promise, providing defensive cover and screening the back four, complementing Mount's role as an advanced midfielder. However, an August injury to Mount served as a reminder of his past absences.

Tielemans' pre-season performances have been geared towards developing an understanding with captain Bruno Fernandes. Carrick praised the character and maturity of the new signings. "Andrey, for such a young man, to come in the way he has, with his character and his personality is a dream," Carrick stated. "He's so positive, so mature, so switched on; he wants to learn. He comes in and straight away he's trying to help other players, talk in games and communicate. He's got a real substance to him."

Describing Tielemans, Carrick added, "Youri's a little bit more obvious, probably because we've seen an awful lot of him and we all know him, but again, the character, the personality, the presence, and the quality on top. The two midfielders in particular, will give us an awful lot moving forward."
