A man set himself on fire inside Google's downtown Manhattan office building on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred at the company's location at 315 Hudson Street shortly before 3 p.m.
Security staff at the building reportedly managed to douse the flames. The 63-year-old individual was then transported to Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is reported to be in stable condition.
According to sources, the fire is believed to have originated from the man's book bag. Law enforcement officials told the New York Post that a collapsible baton was found inside the bag. Surveillance footage reportedly showed the man entering the building around 2 p.m., leaving, and then returning about an hour later before the incident.
Witnesses on the street reported seeing flames in the lobby and security personnel attempting to extinguish them. The New York City Police Department (NYPD) established a crime scene outside the building following the event. Google occupies more than 400,000 square feet of office space at the 315 Hudson Street address.
