A man was rescued Sunday afternoon after falling into a sinkhole in his Phoenix backyard. Firefighters from the Phoenix Fire Department responded to the incident near 24th Street and Thomas Road around 3 p.m.
Upon arrival, crews found the man trapped approximately six feet deep within the sinkhole. Rescue footage released by the department shows a firefighter descending into the hole to reach the trapped individual, who had sustained a chest injury and was unable to climb out on his own.
As the rescue operation was underway, the front right wheel of a pickup truck parked nearby began to sink into the unstable ground. Emergency responders worked to stabilize the vehicle to prevent it from collapsing further into the hole before completing the man's extraction.
After being brought to safety, the man was evaluated by medical personnel and transported to a local hospital in stable condition. No firefighters were injured during the rescue operation.
