The mother of Sayed Mohassib, an ex-NYPD officer charged with fatally stabbing a Brooklyn jogger, expressed her deep sorrow for the victim's family. "I’m so, so sorry for the family," Fatma Mohassib told The Post on Sunday. "My heart go deep for the mother and the father for the girl she passed away. Just I’d like to say to everyone, we both lost. You lost your daughter. I lost my son."
Mohassib, 27, is accused of stabbing Katie Suarez twice in the neck while she was jogging on Oct. 30. His mother acknowledged that her son had been hospitalized in psychiatric wards for up to two months in recent years but maintained he had never been aggressive or harmed others.
"My son, right now, he needs help," Fatma Mohassib said from the family’s Brooklyn home. "He was a Boy Scout, a black belt, he was an excellent boy in every area. He go to the mosque all his life. He go to Brooklyn College."
She stated that Sayed's father also suffers from mental illness and is currently in a psychiatric facility, though she did not believe her son's issues were directly tied to his father's struggles.
According to court documents, Sayed Mohassib told detectives upon his arrest that he went to the park with a knife because "people were going to come and kill his family." He allegedly ran home covered in blood and was later seen on surveillance video discarding his soiled clothing. He reportedly also attempted to clean blood splattered on his room's walls.
Police arrested Mohassib on Saturday after he was identified fleeing the crime scene on surveillance video. He was arraigned and ordered held without bail. Suarez, 28, was a bank teller who did not know her alleged attacker.
