A violent domestic incident in Tasmania, Australia, culminated in a fatal car crash that claimed the lives of the alleged attacker and a nurse. Keith Mitton, 42, is accused of savagely assaulting his partner, identified as Sarah, with a kitchen knife on Friday, July 24.
The attack occurred at Sarah's father's home in Exeter, Tasmania, where she and Mitton had traveled from Perth with her two daughters to meet her family. Following the assault, Mitton fled the scene in a rented blue Skoda.
Fatal Collision
Mitton then drove into oncoming traffic on the West Tamar Highway near Launceston, colliding head-on with the vehicle of Elaine Gee, 39, a nurse and mother of two. The impact caused the Skoda to erupt in a fireball, killing both Mitton and Ms. Gee. Sources indicate Mitton may have had fuel drums in his vehicle, possibly as part of a plan to set fire to Sarah's father's home.
Sarah, the victim of the knife attack, sustained significant injuries to her face. She was transported to a Launceston hospital and has since moved from intensive care to a general ward. Her father described the scene upon his return home, finding his daughter covered in blood and on the phone to emergency services.
Community Support and Aftermath
Ms. Gee was on her way home from a shift at Launceston Hospital at the time of the crash. Her husband, Rodney Gee, described her death as "unfair and crap." Ms. Gee had worked as a nurse for 20 years and was a devoted wife and mother to two sons, aged six and ten. A GoFundMe campaign for her family had raised over $223,000.
Sarah's daughters, who were present in the house during the stabbing but did not witness the attack, are now in the care of her sister and brother-in-law. A GoFundMe for Sarah, created by a family friend and local Member of Parliament, had raised more than $24,000. The funds are intended to support the children's education and counseling, as well as Sarah's medical and living expenses during her recovery.
Family representatives stated that both families were known to each other prior to the tragedy and acknowledged the profound grief experienced by the Gee family. Sarah's father expressed gratitude for the community's support for his daughter and granddaughters.
