A 56-year-old man, identified as Anthony Jones, was killed following a large street brawl in Pontnewynydd, south Wales, on August 6. Police have launched a murder investigation into the incident, which they believe stemmed from a rivalry between the Hells Angels and Vikings motorcycle clubs.
Two other individuals sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital. The fight reportedly involved approximately 20 people armed with weapons including machetes and axes. Residents described one group arriving with weapons such as machetes, axes, and hammers, with some individuals taping machetes to their hands.
Gwent Police stated that they are in the early stages of a complex and fast-moving investigation. As of the latest reports, ten men, aged between 31 and 73, have been arrested in connection with the incident, though three have since been released on bail. Police are also seeking to identify and speak with a 40-year-old man, Anthony Paul Jones, and have released his image. Authorities are also searching for a blue Ford Transit van believed to be connected to the disorder.
The violence is thought to be part of an ongoing turf war between the two outlaw motorcycle clubs. A Facebook account linked to the deceased man reportedly shared posts referencing the Hells Angels and their nickname, 81. The Hells Angels and the Vikings have a documented history of violence and conflict across Britain.
In one instance from October 2022, three Hells Angels members attacked a group of Vikings on the A24 in West Sussex, resulting in one man being severely injured. In that case, Callum Shaw received a 17-year sentence, while Barry Brown and Daniel Kent were jailed for three years, with Kent receiving an additional 12 months for burglary.
Road closures were in place for several days following the August 6 brawl, impacting an estimated 5,000 residents. Senior investigating officer Laura Bartley reassured the public that officers are working diligently to identify all involved parties and bring them to justice, while extending condolences to the victim's family. Information is being sought from the public via Gwent Police channels and Crimestoppers.
