Fifth-generation logger Troy Jackson has defeated incumbent Republican Sen. Susan Collins in Maine, according to projections by the Fox News Decision Desk. This victory marks a significant pickup for the Democratic Party in the battle for the U.S. Senate and ends Collins' nearly 30-year tenure in Washington.
"Maine, I owe you everything," Jackson stated on X. "I’m ready to get to work for Mainers in the U.S. Senate, and I promise you this: I’ll never forget where I came from or who I’m fighting for."
Collins, who was first elected to the Senate in 1996, conceded the race, congratulating Jackson and assuring a smooth transition. "It has been the honor of my life to serve the people of Maine in the United States Senate. I'm proud of all I have been able to accomplish for our state and for our country in the past 30 years," she said.
Jackson, a former Maine Senate President, campaigned as a working-class Democrat and labor advocate. He joined the ballot after the withdrawal of the initial Democratic nominee, Graham Platner, amid allegations of sexual assault.
Collins, known as one of the more moderate Republicans, ran her campaign on a platform of independence and bipartisan dealmaking, highlighting her work on infrastructure, veterans' issues, and rural communities. She pointed to instances where she opposed President Trump and Senate Republicans, arguing that her independence resonated with Maine voters.
Democrats criticized Collins for her voting record, particularly her support for Trump-backed policies and the confirmation of Justice Brett Kavanaugh, asserting that her moderate image no longer aligned with her actions. Jackson's victory is seen as a critical test for Democrats in unseating a Republican incumbent in a state that has trended more Democratic in recent presidential elections.
Jackson's win is projected to have substantial implications for the balance of power in the Senate. He enters the Senate with strong ties to organized labor and rural Maine, and is expected to become a prominent voice on economic issues.
